Trying the sandpaper/mousepad method. I don't think I care much for it. I think I will probably put a conventional V grind on it and make the finger choil just a tad bigger so my finger will fit in there.

Convex rocks! But only if it's done properly and you know how to keep the edge sharp! I tried but still didn't master the mousepad/ sandpaper method...
In stead of widening the coil you could just un-sharpen the corner from the edge to the coil! I did that with my Ratmandu and it works fine without having to reshape the blade.
I made a finger choil once on a large bowie blade that didn't have one. Used a dremel tool. On this one I will just be making it a small bit "Longer", not actually making it larger around.
