I can't say I've tried the method, but I have sharpened on a strop (which is basically the same principle) and noticed that if I press too hard it just rounds off the edge, so lighter pressure is definitely the way to go.
Maybe harder pressure to reprofile and then lighter pressure towards the end and finish with a strop.
