Today my buddy brought his Mosin Nagant over and we shot that while we supervised my younger brother and his dads GF's son shooting .22's. We were sitting at a picnic table shooting first. I wont do that any more I dont think. That metal butt plate doesn't help with much of the force haha.

Nagants were not meant tpo be shot of the bench-----I know, not a lot of help now LOL. You want one, don't you!
Haha. The thing was horridly inaccurate. Those old old sights probably werent helping. And I wont act like I know much about guns I am hardly breaking the surface with knives, guns are a whole other category. The Nagant is fun if you just like to watch it punch through things. Wasn't it more of a gun ment for sporadic firing?
Not knowing the rifle you were shooting I would say it was possibly both you and the rifle. I have shot the Nagant on iron swinging targets out to 400 yds with no problem, and that was more than one Nagant. It could be the brl is worn, you probably devoloped a flinch from the recoil, etc. The Nagant does not have a great trigger but it should not take too many rds to figure it out. Was it a long rifle, short rifle, bayonet on? Do you know what kind of ammo you were using, I remember getting a hold of some Albanian that was broadside of a barn accurate at 100 yds.

So how was your fireworks this evening. Ours was well, non-existant due to the burn ban. On the way home from the cook out the skies got dark and a few rain drops. Sure would be nice to have some serios rain tonight so the kids (all ages) can shoot some tomorrow.

I am going over to a bud's house in the morning. He is buying my DFLE and I am taking the newly acquired grinder and belts over and see what kind of damage we can do on a couple cheap bowies, a British military golok, and some old kitchen knives I have. We will see. Sure will be nice if I can get the hang of it so I don't have to do anymore sandpaper or send them out. Afternoon we are heading to an uncle's place for a cookout. Good thing about it tomorrow is I will have some cold beer. Tonight it was a dry cookout due to all the church people around. Oh well, that is life LOL.
Hope the sanders go well! Is the burn ban due to everything being to dry? Otherwise sounds like the weekend has been good to you all!

Sumo, sorry to hear about the dry conditions. We had a big boomer move through here early evening and knock out power for a few hours.

Lets see. Short version, Would that be carbine model? No bayonet and I am sure the thing was very worn its one of the types you buy at dunhams with a bayonet and everything for like $100 dollars tops. Trigger was pretty easy and standing up definatly made a huge differance for me on recoil. Ammo was like cheap unmarked bulk stuff I think.

I had a couple of Nagant's some years ago. The ammo was very cheap and just a fun shooter. I hope you get much enjoyment out of it.
I need to buy a 308. Or something. I would like to start doing long distance target shooting.
Remember if you are not reloading the .308 can get real expensive. Who am I kidding, it is all expensive today. What distance are you wanting to shoot at eventually. Remember to start short and work on the basics, then move on out in smaller increments. Believe me, it will make sense in time. Very few people I know could just shoot distance right off the bat. There are so many factors it is not funny--wind, elevation, temperature, rifle, ammo, shooter, optics, position, trigger control, breathing, etc.

I figure start at about the 75-100 yard mark and the slowly move out. Slowly by over the course of weeks. I remember hearing that when 50. Cal sniper make Mile+ shots they have to take into account the earths rotation?

I would be happy to be shooting at the 300 yard mark roughly if not farther.

OK now we're talking, I shoot 223 across the course meaning I start at 200 then move back to 300 and finally prone at 600 yards.
Farthest for me with a .223 was a prarie dog kill at a bit over 500 yds. 24" bull brl with a 6-24x optic, CZ 527 with set trigger, setting in a HS Precision stock, bag rested, shooting of a bench. Took three tries to get on him. Lets say a 55 gr Nos;er Ballistic Tip does NOT explode at those distances like they do in the 300 yd range. Wish I could shoot that good still. Wish I had not got rid of that rifle either. Might need to get another soon as I have about 7000 pcs of brass sitting around not being used.

sounds like that's the 1938, short carbine no bayonet.

Shooting across the course can get a little pricey but once you have your equipment your set. You will no doubt need to get into reloading to save on ammo cost. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

My 223 is an Armalite AR15 setup for service rifle match shooting.
Very nice. Is this the heavy brl with free float hg system that looks like a regular A2 hg?
