Guys, if your having bounce backs, set up a prop like Dark norseman there. The dogfather and scrapper 6 will go through that plywood in nothing flat, but it's a good starting medium to throw at. The trick is, to set something up like in the picture. The plywood will bend and absorb a lot of the impact if the knife hits flat. We used plywood set ups like this when i was a kid starting out throwing knives and it saved a lot of toes I'm sure. Only when we moved "up" to large logs did we start having serious bouce-backs.

Good advice, I will have to get some plywood to throw at until I get better.

I just set up my Ranger RD7 to throw and tried a little with it - it does pretty well! I did notice that the micarta grips were getting knocked around a little - so I just took them off and cord wrapped it! I also called Justin to make sure that he didn't care if I chucked his knives at stuff regarding his warranty, and of course, he said to go for it! So now I need to get some technique down!

That looks really good Diceman.

Ryan - thanks man - it was my first attempt. I redid it again last night - its a little better now, but you can see where I got the weave turned around a couple of times - I'll fix it later!:

Diceman,

Nice cord wrap. Oh, thanks for the other info, it answered my Q's.

Just FYI: I used a thick oak plywood. It was left over for a kitchen counter I built for the wifey. Pretty solid stuff but just enough flex.

Cord wrap: excellent job diceman. I might hvae to score an older model rd 6 or 7 and try this. Very cool. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Nice video. I need to set me up a board and practice. There has to be a way to win a beer with skills like that.

Arkie, we play "loser gets the beer" all the time! When it's time to make beer rounds again we have a throw off. Loser gets the beer! PS. Set up several targets far enough away from each other so your handles don't get the "Robin Hood Effect" laid on em'when throwing with friends.

That's solid advice, now I have an excuse to go out and buy a thrower (like I need an excuse to buy another knife). Any suggestions from the yard?

Arkie,
imo, throwing can take a toll on the knife, especially the handle. I've heard about folks cracking their micarta, rivets, etc.
Half decent steel i can alway grind back to shape.. but i would prefer no scales/just bare metal handle, maybe cord wrap.

I'm currently shopping for some dedicated Throwing knives myself! ..inspired by this Norseman's thread!

So far i'm looking at..
Cold Steel Sure Flight Thrower 80TK12, but Andy reminded me the steel has changed..
$19.00 msrp for Older Carbon V
$11.99 msrp for Newer 1055 steel
...Interweb prices are lower..

that's it for now.. What have you found out there?
