Yes that is my handy work.

The buttstock and pistol grip were from Matt at Ironwood Designs, the front handguards are original Israeli, the charging knob came from Sarco and the carry handle I made from an oak dowel. They were all finished in a mix of red oak and mahogany stains, topped off with about 10 coats of Tru-oil hand rubbed in.

Shortly, I'll refinish the FAL in flat black. This was my first build and and was done in 1200 degree engine paint about 5 years ago. I'll say that it has held up nicely considering it was done as cheaply as possible.

And thanks for all the compliments guys!

I'll be sure to post some progress pics of the next build which will be a Para FAL. We already have all the parts, just need the time!

J33pr0cks, I agree this is a great way to spend with our fathers. The three other brothers like to shoot but are not quite as passionately as we are about it. And the way I see it too, it's alot more economical(and fun!) to build ourselves.

I heard a rumor about a Belgium Para FAL repro kit with folding stock. Not only are FALs not allowed here our government melted down 20 000 FN FALs just recently because they did not want to sell them on the surplus market for political reasons.

I would love to check out an AN-95. It is a totally different animal from the AK as it is meant for a professional soldier.

That wood looks awesome Bozo. It makes it look very european like a merc with walnut interior.

Ironwood makes some great stuff.

I'm lucky enough to live within driving distance of his shop. I love buying his seconds. A military rifle should have a little character so I like to have a few knots or sap wood showing. It's cheaper too.

The pistol grip was one of his seconds, maybe $16.00 shipped. It had a void at the front top that simply sanded out, it was really nothing. A great guy to buy from. I'm looking at trying to get a Tabuk stock from him for my bro-in-laws RPK wanna be.

I like G1's.

They were the first large order of FAL's and they have durable metal hand guards.

The worst part about FAL wood is that the belgian style hand guard is pretty weak and they never figured out how to fix it.

Building a G1 clone you avoid the problem and it's awesome when you sort through Matt's pile of seconds and find a matching grain stock and pistol grip cheap.

I like blemishes that won't sand out. A military contract rifle never has a requirement for clear grain with no knots or voids in the wood. It's the great exception that is perfect.

An Ironwood second is still better than most contract rifles and it has character.

Trees are imperfect things, that's why we enjoy chopping them so much.
