Fatwood is an old pine that the sap has drained into and everything else has rotted away. Fatwood won't rot because it is full of pine resin which burns really easy and really hot.

MB, you spent some time in this part of the country. Do we have fatwood here? I've never seen it, but then again probably wouldn't have known it if I had.

Its almost every evergreen except some spruce. I don't remeber which ones thoug.

RTH. there is a ton of fatwood in NC. Next time you find an old weathered looking piece of pine on the forest floor slice a piece off. If it has a very strong pine smell that is it. It will burn in the rain. Old rotten stumps that are hard as a rock are usually good sources.

I'll keep my eyes open when I'm in the woods this week. I'll be out scouting deer hunting locations Thursday and Friday, plus some next week. I've got a good idea where I'll be, but I wanna see if there's any activity there yet.

It's in the hardwoods, mostly oaks. But there's plenty of pines on the way.
