Dad just put up chicken wire around the back of the woodshed. But our winters aren't as bad as yours. Ours hoisted outside in the summer and in the old woodshed in the winter. No insulation.

We kept chickens for years. The last of them died a couple years ago and dad never got any more.

My neighbor dropped off a couple dozen eggs from his chickens last night; we LOVE farm-fresh brown eggs! We used to have ducks too. Duck eggs are great, and there's more of it to love.

I remember as a kid that Grandma and Grandpa (Dad's parents) Had a chicken coop. They had (stalls?) for about 30 laying hens. At one time I bet they had close to 50 chickens. Course the fenced in area probably was about 100X50 feet. The Coop was just an old shed Grandpa put up, plain sawmill board walls and a tin roof. Year round. Course he did have a couple heaters he used in the winter sometimes if it was specially cold.

We put a kiddy pool in the chicken lot for the ducks, had to change the water every day. I hated those things, was glad to see dad give them away.

Sounds like you made a good trade Tom. I like brown eggs too. Seems to taste better to me.
