there are some really good village sites down here.. the amateurs won't tell the state cause the state digs 'em up and won't let the amateurs keep the find.. it causes big issues

you almost dont blame them. I have looked but never found one myself. My buddy found a hand axe that the plow broke in half after the till. I have some nice ones and I am trying to get the hang of flint knapping. It sure is harder than it looks.

When I first started I thought I was finding junk. I then borrowed my mom's Indian artifacts book that includes my area and to my surprise the junk turned out to be knives and scrapers.

i don't blame them at all... they do all the research, find the sites, and when they tell the state, it is declared off limits.. the state maps it out, makes models and puts all of the find in boxes and puts them in warehouses.. never to be seen again... major sites or burial grounds i can understand. You do not disturb burial grounds.... but little village sites... if it is found by amateurs, they should get a piece of the action...

but what do i know

We've got a lot of Indian village ruins around here. One is called Joara, very interesting place and they do have an open house every year.

That reminds me of the NY's gold law.

The "King's Law" which dates back to 1775, gives the state of New York all rights to minerals found within the state, which means any gold you may find while prospecting in New York belong to the state!

Dad used to walk the corn fields near the river during hunting season. He'd find arrowheads and spear heads about every trip.

i agree. A burial site is one thing but like you said a village or even a hunting camp is diff.

I'd love to find a museum piece.
