Sometimes you guys are scary, informative and educational, but scary!.. Think of the stuff we know that we DON'T talk about... You just might want to start carrying a can on Raid Wasp and Hornet killer to get those buggers running away!!! Or another option is you could carry a glass of sulfuric acid. You can buy battery acid and make a still and distill the water out to make it a stronger concentration. I heard about someone using this as a weapon before. The guys face started melting off. And it will keep melting until you add some baking soda to neutralize it. Or you can always make your own mace. Get some really hot pepper seeds. Put them in a jar and cover with some high proof alcohol. Leave it for a week shaking a couple times a day. Distill off the alcohol. Then the hot pepper oil you can cut with some mineral oil. Then use an empty nasal sprayer to suck it up inside. The nasal sprayer you can widen the hole a bit so it will spray farther. It’s an “undercover” weapon that wouldn’t be noticed in places mace is…frowned upon. Another option is enbalming fluid. Nasty stuff. You can order it through a pharmacy. Tell them you want to preserve some animals if they get nosey. Then put it in the nasal sprayer. I heard of someone getting hit with that, and they went into convulsions and blacked out.

Don't forget about bear repellent: 10 yard by 30 degree wide arc from one quick blast, and powerful enough to stop a charging grizzly in its tracks. Or you can always make your own mace. Get some really hot pepper seeds. Put them in a jar and cover with some high proof alcohol. Leave it for a week shaking a couple times a day. Distill off the alcohol. Then the hot pepper oil you can cut with some mineral oil. You can buy pure capsaicin from some stores that sell hot sauces and gourmet foods (oops! Almost forgot... we're talking about Britain, land of "meat pasties" and "suet pudding" ), or order it online from hot sauce resellers. Mike

I'm one of the 'sneaky Hogs' that voted more than once. Placed the vote one day; logged back in a few days later and the ability to vote was still there so I thought "must not've took" and voted again. Bowie works for me, though.
GravelFace,
Don't know of any evidence that hydrochlorofluorocarbons were depleting stratospheric ozone. Do you?
Evolute,
Have you seen the bear repellant stop a charging grizzly bear? If it's made of oleo-capsacin, wouldn't it make the bear eat the unfortunate user and then search for a Rolaids?
Paul the Brit,
We need to convince to you to emigrate to the USA. Or convince Britain that its oft-imitated legal system wasn't spread throughout the world by cowering from evil-doers and sanctimoniously attack all whom would assert their right to exist freely from the initiation of force.
Andy Wayne has made quite a good case for Indiana. When may we expect you?

Home, home on the (firing) range... I'll just go persuade the wife!..
The only real thing wrong with 'good old Blighty' is that people keep forgetting that criminals are agreeing to give up their human rights when they go to violate others rights! The only good crim' is a dead one (they don't re-offend!)

That is an EXCELLENT idea Andy!!! If it didn't knock out the mugger, it would sure buy you some valuable time to make your exit.

The best form of self defence is geography- being somewhere else! That mace would give you a little time to go find somewhere else.. nice little toy and innocuous too. A padlock on the cord would have similar effect...

If it didn't knock out the mugger, it would sure buy you some valuable time to make your exit. IF!? IF!? I think you’re underestimating it. It is incredibly heavy and dense. As you can see, it’s smaller than a bic lighter, yet it weighs 8 oz! I have before taken a .50 cal lead ball, and threw it really hard from one hand to the other. Do it hard enough and it hurts pretty bad. And they weigh very little. On a cord, the longer you make it = more leaverage = harder you can hit with it. Try an experiment. Go find the largest sinker in your tackle box, or biggest lead muzzleloader ball you have. Try throwing it hard from one hand to the other. See whatcha think. But be careful, if you make the cord too long, it’s hard to control and you can hurt yourself. Several years ago a friend of mine made one of these but he used a 1 oz sinker. He was lightly swinging it around, and he flipped it wrong and hit himself in the head. He woke up on the floor. Imagine if you swing one as hard as you can that’s 8 times heavier than that. I think anywhere on a body that you’d hit with this would take someone down. These are much more damaging than an ASP, and waaaaaay cheaper. I always thought I could probably clean up at a gunshow if I made a bunch of these and sold em for like $5 each. A padlock on the cord would have similar effect... Yeah, that’s what they do in prison. A lock in a sock. But, a decent lock probably couldn’t be found for this cheap. And if you bought a really cheap lock, it might pop open when you swing it and fly off and hit you. And, a lock wouldn’t be as dense. Density focuses the weight of the object on a smaller area to do more damage than a less dense object. Like for instance, a 3” square of aluminum wouldn’t hurt as bad as being hit with a 3” square of steel…or 3” square of lead. Gold is about TWICE as dense as lead, but that would be unaffordable for this. Maybe that’s why the rappers like the big bling necklaces. They can swing ‘em as a weapon if need be. I’ll give ya one more variation on this idea. You take a baseball cap, and attach a smaller, heavy sinker to the back. Inside, outside, whatever. I would sew it on with some really strong kevlar type cord. Then, if you need to defend yourself, you just grab the bill and swing it. They’d never see it coming. If you need to worry about keeping it legal, you also can attach some fishing line, and a couple small taped hooks (for safety) inside the edge of the lining. Then, it’s not a weapon…it’s your emergency fishing kit! But, I was doing this way before Jerry thought of it.
