so I see obama has promoted an agenda of leasing oil rights to unprotected parts of the gulf and alaska

and a proposal to the end of subsidies to the oil companies

I especially agree with the latter. No way those companies should be making record profits without paying the piper

we have such cheap gas prices compared to many other oil importing nations.

I am a firm believer in taxing gas to pay for roads, because of the economic benefits- it is a relatively inelastic good, and therefore the dead weight created by the tax is minimal compared to other taxes. Also, when the revenues collected go directly to improving the infrastructure requried and used by the vehicles that utilize the gas, it creates a relatively effective methodology for taxing those that use the infrastructure the most.

basically, its an efficient tax. Unfortunately, its a politically unpopular one.
