The coating on my MilReg is almost gone at "the belly". This finish wear is a result of LOTS of baton work.

OP - just watch for rust, and enjoy your knife!

Great knife, I would keep on using it and leave the coating as it is. The more you use it the nicer it will look. Forced patina is nice but "real" patina is nicer.

Thanks guys. Does anyone have a pic of a knife with a patina finish

This is my Dereg, the Patina is a little more custom than some, but it can be as pretty or as drab as you'd like, just takes a little creativity!

[Linked Image from i22.photobucket.com]

I washed the blade in a phosphoric acid solution to get the base patina a fairly even coating, they're metal cleaner stick originally intended to clean rust from the pinchweld under a windshield. the first coat I let the knife soak for about 10 minutes. The Stripes I applied with good old fashioned ketchup, using a q-tip, I dipped and applied liberally, then I let it sit about 40 minutes before rinsing it off. The forced patina also acts as a "red" rust inhibitor, preventing corrosion, although technically it is a form of surface rust.
