Gentlemen,
I'm a grateful owner of 2 Regs. Unfortunately the skinning grip is no good for my hand size on the regular Reg and I'm thinking about milling down the rear guard on one of my Regs. I'm even contemplating reducing the front guard as it doesn't fit my fingers well.
Has anyone done any of this and can provide any advice? Luckily I do have access to a good milling machine. Dan can you hear me???
Muchas gracias to all, you guys are the best!
Live long and prosper.

The Regulator handles have been a touchy issue in the not too distant past. There are a few strong opinions on it that differ greatly.
I say Go For It and do what you want, it would be cool to see what mod you come up with.
I may mod one of mine eventually too, I'm still workin on it in my head though. Right now I thinkin about rehandling it completely in the same basic style as Jerry's Battle Pappy.
Now my 6.5 Reg, I can't even imagine modding it though, I really like it just the way it is!

I'm thinking you can pretty much grind or sand whatever area you want to whatever profile you want without too much problem. I remember when the reg/de-reg first came out and Dan said that the mill marks on the de-regs could be smoothed out with sandpaper i think. I have thought about doing it with one of mine and was just going to use a disc and or belt sander with whatever grits seemed to work best. Possibly even my 4" grinder or dremel.

I believe dan added some more steel under the guards of the milregs, making them a tad longer. I think he put a pic up of the difference, but I can't find it.Maybe mine will help. TTReg on top,MilDeReg on bottom. ![[Linked Image from i760.photobucket.com]](http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx242/myketheknife/002-4-2.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i760.photobucket.com]](http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx242/myketheknife/003-4.jpg)

Never could get behind the hand guard thing. Haven't found too many applications where it'd be useful for me. Others may have. I went with a dereg from day one. like the way it feels.

My thanks to each of you. While I speculate that the knife may look a bit odd (ugly?) with a Bowie point and no guards, at this point I think the experimentation might be worth it. I've always been a function over form kinda fella. As Dan did not chime in, I may have to email him as I am concerned about milling off too much and subsequently trashing my knife. It would be nice to have some advice based on their first-hand Reg-to-Dereg experience. Unfortunately I wasn't blessed with the artistic skills of a sculptor...
That being said, the other one of my two will remain bone stock!

I like the option of choking up on the grip and having my thumb over the top of the guard. Couldn't do that with the standard grip. DeRegulator from the beginning for me as well.

For me I have no need to De-Reg. It seems comfortable to use the choil and choke up over the top of the existing guard/hilt. Leaving it in place for the unlikely event I would ever need it in a self defense scenario. Plus keeping the look balanced.
Different strokes for different folks.

See when Dan offered the Dereg and reg at the same time I got both. Still not sure why since I had the TT Reg and it was near perfect in the first place.

I prefer the Dereg, and will probably mod at least some of the 6.5s I bought. ResC is some pretty tough stuff -- I recall seeing a picture where a squirrel had nibbled on a handle, but am not sure how well/cleanly it cuts, and I haven't been adventurous enough to experiment yet. I'm not sure if freezing the handle beforehand might help or not; it might even be worthwhile to fabricate a simple jig to support the upper guard, then 'guillotine' through it with a thin blade.

I prefer the Dereg as well; the full handle is more suited to a larger blade-- at least it seems to me.

Sand it!If you don't have a belt sander,a sanding block will do & won't take long at all with a coarse grit.
