Wow!!!
That's really amazing! Both the level of sharpness your got and the great even finish with the perfect grind line. Awesome work!
What was your set up? I mean, sandpaper over a hard or soft backing? How do you hold the sandpaper in place?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
I use a DLT two sided leather strop (not sure if posting links is allowed but if you google it you'll find it). I wrap 220 automotive sand paper around it and then place the saber grind flat on my strop. I just go forward and backwards with even pressure and since the leather is not a hard material gradualy the straight saber grind becomes a convex grind. Depending on how much your backing material gives determines what kind of convex you get.
I finish one side (I know I'm there when I get an ever so slight burr), flip it over and repeat. Then I repeat the entire process with 600 and again with 1000. You can go higher if you like. Once that's all done it will already be sharp but to make it really sharp I then strop on the leather with black bark river compound and finish with their white stuff.
If you like you can also blend it so you're only taking the bottom two thirds of the saber grind if you like. That's totally up to you.
I use a glock field knife as a "backstop" stabbed into an old work table where I push my strop against with my hip. It's a pretty wild setup but it works for me.
Sumo I teach grade 4 this year but have taught 3, 6, 7 and 11 in the past.
Thank you again all for the kind comments.
