yesterday i sharpened a sar3 and a sus scrofa. both took a good shaving sharp edge but they lacked the bite the regulator mrcweiler has. i did everything exactly the same with the same angle.

anyone using the wheels will notice some knives will get sharper than others depending on the steel and heat treat. a knife can have good steel but if it has a poor heat treat it wont take or hold a good edge.

i had a kitchen knife that gave me fits trying to sharpen it one day. i tried different angles and even a convexed edge. i set it aside and tried a few others with good results.

a few weeks later a member came by and i gave him a crash course on the wheels and had him give it a go. he had the same results i had so we came to the conclusion that the heat treat was not right which kept it from getting really sharp.

Wow! Just got home and my wheels were waiting for me, attached them to my pc grinder, waxed the grit wheel and added rouge to the paper wheel, after this ( maybe 20 minutes getting everything put together) I had my spyderco para 2 from kinda dull to SCARY FREAKIN sharp in about 1 and a half minutes! Just awesome!

Was at the hardware store today and saw a buffer wheel for only 49bucks - very tempted by this BUT I must admit I want to hone (no pun intended) my non mechanical sharpening skills first + there was a setup with a buffer wheel AND a belt sander for about 100 which I would prob be able to have more uses from.

jroden, try a knife that has a decent edge on the slotted wheel. you'll be suprised what it can do to an existing edge. you should practice with some cheaper knives before sharpening your good knives.

lonereader, by buffer wheel do you mean a buffer with a cloth wheel mounted on it? post a link to the buffer, sander setup you are thinking of getting.

I did a couple touch ups of already sharp edges with just the slotted wheel, worked great, I also sharpened all my moms kitchen knives for her, took them over to her today, she was amazed at how sharp I got them. So far the whole experience is easier and faster than a belt sander

Well...I had been wanting to try this system out, especially since I had only gotten a Harbor Freight belt sander. Finally got the time to get the stuff together and sit down in front of it today. WOW!! What a great system!! I bought the starter kit and assembled the wheels on my Porter-Cable 6" grinder (variable speed). Just followed the instructions and started off on my old crappy kitchen knives. Didn't take me long at all to fall into the process.

Sharpened two of my SS4's, B11, 6.5 Reg, DMCG, three Scrapivores and all of my kitchen knives. I even through a more aggressive penetrator tip on my EDC SS4. I felt that I had much more control than the HF belt sander. I'm sure some of the 42" belts are a bit better..but my HF hops all over the place and I can't fully control tension. I won't be using it again...

Big thanks for posting this. Each of my knives...even the thick 6.5 are hair popping sharp now!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
