Hello All,
Just joined the forums, and waiting for my first SY knife... haha
Could anyone tell me more about the knife coating, what type of coating they are? Besides the basic black coating, the multicolor coating for Scrapivores look different, like the tanker gray, the glossy orange.. what are the material of these?
And generally speaking, are they safe to cut food?
Thank you

Thank you The coatings barely come off when battoning the knives through gnarly knotted wood so I doubt they are likely to come off when prepping food !

Hello Pitman,
Thanks for the answer, I am sure they will not come off; I am wondering, the material for the coating, the black, especially those colorful green, orange... are they safe when in contact with food?

I've personally only ever experienced minor hallucenations and brain damage...had nothing to do with the coatings though
Sorry, realize it's a serious Q. I personally wouldn't have any issue with it, but if you are concerned, you might want to look for an uncoated blade (LE, satin, double cut, stripped) on bladeforums, at a periodic "ganza", at a future offering, and/or get one yourself at Blade (or see if someone is willing to proxy).
Ang welcome to the Yard!

I believe its a epoxy type coating, like said its pretty tough and would take some use to wear it down. In preping food I wouldn't worry, you would need to injest a sizable amount to be caused harm.
If its a bother it comes off easily with paint stripper and a lemon will give a nice gray patina.

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies, I will not worry too much as long as it is not paint.
Just I saw discussions about coating and food prep in other forums, and did not see much information about coating on SY knife, so would like to know more.
DT, you did scared me for 2 seconds... haha
Timelord , nice to see you here.
Have a good weekend , guys..
