I am biased towards the westrn US because that's what I know having spent my whole life here. For me, being able to find work is a priority. The places where I want to live are not necessarily the places that I can find work so that creates some challenges. My favorite states are Idaho, Colorado, and Montana, Arizona. That being said, I have been able to find cool places in any US state I have been in from New York to California.

They dont hate the Lifestyle of California...The POLITICS and Gun laws are what people hate...Including a Native Californian.....I have been here all my life and will be leaving because of those two factors as soon as my oldest is in college and out of the house. It is a great place to live as far as weather, scenery, nightlife and entertainment. You can get to all terrains within hours...Mountains, city, desert, Ocean...You just have to pay through the nose for it and deal with all the anti-gun liberal Idiots! The newest debacle...San Francisco wants to ban Circumcision????? WTH??????

I'll include California in my wish list, as I never had a firegun and I'll never do (probably). A SAK in the town, a 4" knife outdoor, and I'm a happy man :-) As I'm really interested in undertsanding as better as I can other cultures, your answers open me to other points of views, many thanks. Here also we had politics that seems to be crazy, or even worst: Berlusconi it's the n. 1 in this list :-)

I think some of the suggestions are great but was wondering why no suggestion in the midwest states? I have lived in the Ohio valley(Ohio,WV,PA) all my life and by no means think that it's perfect but it isn't to bad. I would love to head a bit more south to maybe the western part of N. Carolina, I've always been leary of anywhere that has the chance of hurricanes, floods or tornados.

Oregon ! A climate a lot like Northern Italy and also has the ocean and the mountains. Maybe a bit more rain than you would want though.
I lived in Aviano Italy for 3 years and it was almost an identical climate to the one here in Western Oregon.

I'm partial to South Carolina my home state. You've got the beaches to the east, foothills to the west many freshwater lakes, rivers, swamps, fishing, hunting, water sking, friendly people, good eatin', the list is endless. Oh, and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

I love Southern California. Everywhere else I've been to feels like trading down. Ocean waves to Mountain snow to high desert all in a matter of a 2 hours driving. Its expensive here, so if you have money/employment issues, COASTAL SoCal (the part I'm most familiar with) is not for you. Large properties are either costly or inland. Also, SoCal is horizontal (vs vertical NY city) and as such, an automobile is needed to fully appreciate the area.
Not a business friendly environment either, so if thats your planned mode of economic sustenance (local service industry aside), run away.
State knife laws rock. Public concealed folder is state legal (just don't pull it out! (thats what she said)). Public open carry fixed blade (eg sword) on belt is state legal (just don't unsheath it!). Problem is SOME local governments pass their own more restrictive laws.
that said, we're too crowded.
If you got the cash, Hawaii is my pick!!

I have been all over the U.S. I was born and raised and finally returned to Missouri. There are nice areas ANYWHERE! But personally I would have my IDEAL home in the mountains somewhere, The Rocky Mountains area, along the mountainous Pacific NorthWest or the Rocky/Appalachian mountains areas. I just like the mountains/views.
