I met up with the family of my first college roommate (who was killed in Afghanistan two and a half years ago) over the weekend, about an hour drive from my apartment and I barely knew him, roomed with him for a few weeks then he left for a second tour my freshman year of college.. but I know small stuff like that probably cheered up his family at least a little.
Even when i lived with him, he had just gotten back from his first tour and didn't have a "normal" sleep schedule, he slept from about 9 am to 5 pm then was up all night working out, playing video games and tying up new stuff/knives with para-cord.
He taught me how to tie just about every knot i know, in only a few days of him showing me stuff. In turn, i showed him some new jujitsu defensive movements as he had learned some but mostly just basic holds and things in training. (i used to wrestle and fight in MMA for a few years before going to college)
I just got home cause we all drank a ton of gin and tonic (which i don't particularly enjoy, but it was Joe's favorite, he always had one or seven before going to sleep)
Hope you all had a good weekend as well, This was the first time ive seen them be happy and joke and talk about find memories rather than reflect on how tragic his death was.
