Just got one of these. Anyone have any experience with one? Good or bad?

Thanks.

Very cool, just watched a youtube video about the blastmatch. Looks like a good concept.

I had a chance to test one similar to the blastmatch while I was in Brasil. It was for sale at a camping store, but it wasnt the blastmatch brand and it was really expensive.

really nice concept but my concern is WHAT if you don't have a hard surface to press against? It may not really be a concern, but not ever having one, only seeing videos seems to me like a firm surface is needed.

I have had a blast match for years Now. Its a gimmick. They are ok but I prefer regular firesteel.

It's a good backup for one handed use but I don't trust plastic and springs. Try ESEE's misch metal one or TOPS little comb striker(perfect for small kits). They are both great alts to Firesteel.

I've had a couple of them, but only kept one. I like the one-handed operation, but the construction is a little flimsy. Be careful, or you will break off the "swinging cap".

They work better at making fire (without highly combustible tender like petrol jelly on cotton balls) than a standard "fire steel" because they throw the sparks straight down into the tender bundle.

I haven't been too too enthralled with mine, although they're nice to have around JIC. I have several fire starting options stashed in the truck, as well as flammable materials, so it has really become a "which do I want to use" sorta thing. I find it difficult to get just the right amount of pressure to throw out the best shower of sparks, so it could just be me though. I prefer my magnesium block for pure heat output. They're not bad for the money though, and you can always use a knife to strike it if you have trouble with the lever.

I've had one for years also, thought it was a pretty cool idea. But it is better as an idea then for actual use. Never could keep a tinder bundle together and push down into it. I use the back of my knife on it more than I use it one handed. I should pull out the rod and make a handle for it so I can use it like a normal firesteel.
