Thanks guys. Seems there are mixed reviews on the BlastMatch. I'll add it to my pack as a backup but I have a Light My Fire Fire steel for my primary...thats if my lighters fail. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Flick your Bic!
I had one of the mini ones from Going Gear(Sparkie) & it didn't last long, pretty flimsy.
Now their misch rods are great.(GGs)
I was showing off at work this morning & started some strips of waxed paper with a GG misch rod.
The strips were from a waxed tub we use for small parts cleaning,so pretty thick, not actually waxed paper & thicker than a paper cup.
I think of waxed paper as man made fatwood. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Waxed paper, Hum...... man made fatwood, never thought of that. May have to try some and see how it does. Do you crumple it into a paper wad or what?

KS - my primary fire starting method is now, and will forever be a LMF Fire Steel.

Rub some cotton balls in Vasoline, and store them in a 35mm film canister (you can get these free at WalMart's photo lab). Pull out a little bit out, and hit it with a few sparks from the LMF = INSTANT and STABLE BURNING tinder.

I've started fires in torrential rain this way.

Crumpling into a loose ball would work for the regular wrapping type waxed paper. The thicker stuff,I tear into strips.

One time just for grins I rubbed some hand sanitizer on a piece of TP. Caught fire and burned pretty good! I had heard you could use that as an accelerant but had never tried it before.

BE WEARY OF FIRESTEEL CLAIMS!

The Light My Fire "Scout" Model is advertised as been able to start 3000 fires.

I've worn out two of them in as many camping seasons. They are NOT as long lasting as the manufacturers would have you believe. The key to a ferro rod is using the factory striker - using a knife blade accelerates the wear dramatically.
