Hey KS, my receiver has a "Loudnesss" knob. IF you turn it all the way up, you can turn the actual volume down lower and you don't "Loose" anything in the music. You know how you loose something when you normally turn the volume down. From my lame explanation can you tell me what it is doing to make it sound so much better at a lower volume? All I know is that it DOES sound better with the loudness turned up and the actual volume knob in a more comfortable listening level.

SK that´s a very nice setup! Because you have power and you are allready using a subwoofer you could think using MG 1.7 loudspeakers? I liked those but I don´t want to use a sub so I´m not going to get them. Btw they were driven with ASR Emitter amp and McIntosh CD!

I figured that would be the last stereo system I would ever have and so far I have been correct. I'm 57 now (not really that old) but it still provides all the listening pleasure we need.

Sounds like one is a gain and the other is a volume attenuator. So you can turn up the gain and lessen the volume. you get more sound across the audio spectrum without having to blast the volume and increase distortion. I could be wrong but thats my take.

I remember the old Nakamichi Dragon - That all the rage when I was younger. It was a huge bada$$ tape deck.

THAT is the one that I wanted, but I WAS NOT going to pay 1000.00 just for a tape deck! Mine is the next one down from the dragon.

The loudness is for accenting high and low frequences that are usually heard weaker when listening in low volume. If you have an equalizer with for example 5 to 10 knobs or channels, make it look like a letter U or V and there you have it. A hand made loudness.

I used to have an equalizer but it broke on me so I got rid of it. Oh I also have a DBX unit for the system. It will really remove a lot of the "static or hiss" from tapes and albums.

Yeah. most loudness buttons accentuate the lower end - its basically a bass boost, but how he described his seemed different hence my take at explaining it. In most systems though, loudness is an accentuation of the lower end (bass boost) or in some cases both the lower and upper as tim described.
