Even though I've been here for quite awhile I still have no idea what that means and I know I should by now. Do you mind explaining to a slow learner or point me in the direction of some good reading material about the difference?

The diff heat treat is the heat treatment where you see the line on the blade, this makes for a extremely strong blade that also holds a edge well. The edge half is harder than the spine.

So differential heat treatment is what they have been doing to samurai swords for centuries? Using a clay mixture to coat the blade creating the harmon line and allowing the edge and spine to heat and cool at a different pace? If that's the case, I guess I do know what it means.

Yes, differential heat treatment. The edge is harder to take and maintain a cutting edge. The rest of the blade is softer, usually it gets softer the closer it gets to the spine, so it will be more prone to bend and not shatter.

Differential heat treat sr101 would be fine for these knives- (ie I'd consider buying a 711 in diff' sr101 as the SOD is long gone) the CT and BR were legends.. Personally I'd much prefer good old sr77 just because it doesn't rust too much, if at all, in my experience! I understand that sr101 needs a bit more 'love' to keep tin-worm at bay. We'll see how my 511 does! I'm just glad Dan has designed another classic! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
