I am paying $3.73 for a gallon of Diesel. It used to be cheaper than gas. I think gas is about $3.45 a gallon.

All right. So a gallon is about 3,7 litres and € is about 1,3$ so what you are paying is about a third of the price here...

Actually gas is about 0.7 € in your neck of the woods per litre, so it´s more like half of the price here...

Your fuel is taxed at an insane amount. You´ve got that right! About 80% of the resale price is different kind of taxes!
