GD, If your family has the ar15 platform, I would say go with the flow. Weapons familiarity will be there and also commonality of ammunition, thereby making resupply easier. Plus like you said it's cheaper and you can carry more ammo for the same weight.

I think a suppressed 22 would be the ultimate squirrel gun. I hunt with a Ruger 10/22. Wish it was suppressed, but its illegal to hunt with one here.

I think that I'm gonna go back to the 20 gauge til the leaves get off the trees. I had a time getting shots the other day because of the leaves.
