Not normally, a very small percentage of people can get a permit to wilderness carry a pistol for self-defense.

You've got to be kidding! I know here SOME officers (depending on their classification, that is the classification of their department) can only carry off duty in their jurisdiction. Well at least it was that way when I worked as a certified police officer.

O'bama wouldn't even make a left of center grouping in the Liberal Party.
The Liberals have governed Canada for most of the last 50 years, and they have worked steadily at eroding gun owners rights since the 1970's (our pistols have been under fire since the 1950's).
Right now we have a Conservative government (first since the early 1980's), they are in the process of getting rid of the mandatory registration laws for shotguns and rifles.
Even they are too scared to try to loosen the laws on restricted and prohibited firearms as the bulk of Canada's population is in Ontario and Quebec and they are very left wing in their political thinking

A semi-auto AR15 is classified as a restricted firearm.
I can buy one because of my RPAL, HOWEVER the only place I can legally take it is the gun range.
And yet a mini 14 is non-restricted so I can take it anywhere
