I am getting my thoughts in the works for a workhorse camp/survival knife (probably the SY 711 when released)and I want to make up a smaller fire starter kit that will utilize a smaller blade. can anyone suggest a small knife dedicated to just firesteel scraping? I was thinking a scrapivore but I would need the back edge spine to have sharp edges and since I am new to SYK's I do not know much about them. Is it possible to get a scrapivore with no coating? Any opinions?

The Scrapivore would be a good blade for a fire steel striker. Mainly in my mind since it has a pry bar pommel. However I think you need bare steel to strike a fire steel so removing the coating on the edge of the pry pommel would be in order. However the coating is very easy to remove by simply soaking it in lacquer thinner. Here is a picture of mine that I stripped and then forced a patina on. The patina is a good idea since SR-101 is very prone to rust.

That looks awesome. What did you use for the patina?

Thanks man! I actually took a two lemons and halved them. Then with the flesh part of the lemon facing down I pushed the scrapivore into the halves. I think I let sit about 20 minutes but should have went a little longer since the patina kinda faded after awhile. I would also suggest using like 1500 to 3000 grit just to polish the steel a little. A DA sander works great!

I just bought my first SYK I am SOOOO stoked. I bought a Scrapivore and I am going to use it as my firesteel striker. I am thinking that instead of altering the cutting edge of the blade I will use a 1/4-5/16"" file and put 2-3 false edges on the spine of the blade.

The butt and the spine on my scrapivore work great.

Awesome, does the finish remove itself as you strike the firesteel? I have not held the scrapivore yet so I want to make sure I would not get cut using the butt of the blade. I have no problem usinf the spine as that is the knife I was specifically buyinf for my striker so I am not gonna keep it a safe queen by ANY means

The coating comes off quickly. Mine is orange and the coating is quite a bit different than the standard offerings. The spine works much better than the butt on mine.

Are the back edges of the knife cut sharply or rounded off? How can I remove the coating? I am considering having the knife beadblasted

I would not recommend beadblasting a knife made from SR-101. It will increase the propensity to rust, which it does pretty well already.

OH, ok well thank you for that input. I will see how well it striked the firesteel, I may just make a few custom flat serrations to be used specifically for the firesteel
