Anyone own a rifle chambered in it? Been thinking real hard about getting one, probably bolt action. I think it would make a great small varminting round. I know the .22 Hornet might be comparable, but I think the 5.7x28 would be an interesting option.

I'm interested in reading some of your thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Personally, I'd go with a .22 magnum or a .17 HMR. I've got both, ammo is easy to find and I think they both do a heck of a job on varmits. Only shot the 5.7 in a pistol, but I wasn't impressed.

Thanks Todd

I was looking for something to bridge the gap between the .22 mag and the .223, and the 5.7 is kind of a scaled down .223. I agree with you about the availability, that's really the only thing keeping me from getting one. Maybe one day the 5.7x28 will gain some popularity.

I own the five seven and I've been really happy with it. I would like to find an inexpensive bolt rifle chambered in the same round at some point. there was mention of savage making a rifle but I'm not sure if it ever came to market. there is a company called elite ammuntion make some nice ammo that's supposed to really take better advantage o what the caliber offers than the FNH factory 5.7x28 ammo. There stuff is also more expensive though. From what I've read it's worth the price. They would also be the goto company if 5.7x28 was to have a good hunting load.

If I didn't already have a 5.7 firearm I think I would go with .17 or .223 just because it's going to be way, way easier to find. I think the 5.7 is very capable but when you factor in the price and availability it starts to take away from the round for something like a varmint rifle. I think the round is best left to specialized, high capacity, personal defense weapons.

But if you really want 5.7x28 there is another company called Excel Arms making a couple semi auto rifle that will use 5.7x28 or 22 magnum. excelarms.com

I have a PS90 fun and very handy rifle. The 5.7x28 was made to fill the gap between a 9mm and 5.56 Nato.
I would not get it for a bolt action. Go with a .17 HMR

Thanks guys, I definately appreciate the input. I'll probably just go with a .22 WMR or .22 Hornet. If the 5.7x28 ever gains in popularity, becomes more readily available, and becomes less expensive then I'll take another look at it.

Yeah, I'm really just trying to stay within two or three steps above 22lr. I'd like to keep it small. I don't want to obliterate the small game.

So I just read This Post and thought it was very the interesting. There is/or at least was a savage bolt gun in 5.7x28mm as well the Thompson Center offering in addition to the more well know FNH offerings and the AR-5.7 uppers.

I don't really see a 5.7x28mm firearm in my collection, but i must say it is beautiful niche filler
