Hey thanks JB, some good reading there. I just might do it if I ever start doing my own reloads.

Adam - if you want a cartridge that is a bridge between the 22Mag and 223Rem then I suggest you look at the 22 Hornet.
218 Bee and 22 Hornet are great "intermediate" (short range) varmint rounds, but the 218B is virtually dead now. The 22H on the other hand is still around.

Thanks Gary, the 22 Hornet is one of my top contenders. It'll more than likely win out.

Man, couldn't you just get a 223 and use some of the light loads?
The Howa Ranchland Compact is very nice...

As a Five-Seven owner, I'd be interested in looking into said round in a rifle, maybe the Thompson Encore model. Ammo wouldn't really be an issue since I usually have one or two rounds lying around . It would be nice to add a little variety to the anti-prairie dog arsenal. J

I'm a guy that always tries to fit "gear" into a self-imposed survival models or categories. Therefore, I will always try to limit the number of calibers I have. This means any varmint control will be handled with a 22LR or 5.56x45mm.
I guess a good ole 7.62x51mm might be called upon for certain types of "varmints" if the conditions were right
