Helllo and brrr from Canada.
I plan on putting a convex edge on my 511 sykco
In all my reading on the subject ,very rarely is raising a burr mentioned.Of the many videos i`ve watched i think it was mentioned once. The videos pretty much show random grinding, the more random grinding on the other side.
Am i not getting something,is a burr still not an important aspect of convex process.
As always ,i appreciate your responses and wisdom
thanks

I don't find that a burr is required when sharpening any type of edge.

I hone my hollow ground straight razors and never get a burr as I never make more than one stroke with out switching sides. I guarantee all my straight razors are sharper than any field, combat, bush etc etc knife out there.

A burr is useful to let you know you have honed the edge down to the other side, but it is nor required to get a hair popping edge.

To answer your question, if you use the burr as an indicator to help you determine when you have honed a side enough, then yes a burr is useful when sharpening a convex edge.

JarheadJournalist -thanks,i understand once the edge is reprofiled, maintaining it wont require raising a burr, but initially isnt that the objective
thanks

When re-profiling an edge on my belt sander, a burr is the indicator that, the profile of the angle has reached all the way down to the edge. The shallower the angle, the more easily a burr is obtained. The angle you choose will determine strength VS. Razor like sharpness of the edge. You must then move on to the finer grit, so as not to take off too much material, shortening the blade height. If you don't get the new profile all the way down to the edge, as indicated by the burr or visually, the blade won't end up sharp, no matter how pretty and shiny it is. Some steels show this burr more easily than others. SR101 shows pretty good, and will get very sharp. If you are going with a shallow angle and not seeing a burr, you may be applying too much pressure on the blade. Hope this helps.
