I know what our guys carry, and it's a pile of stuff. I guess if you were expecting it, you could prepare for it by consolidating your carry load.

We have so few cars that they are almost constantly on the move. So, we use our own cars, motorcycles, bikes and sneakers to go home... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

We don't have the space to park all the vehicles to run the cars hot especially with overlapping shifts. Plus they get free coverage on the way too and from the office. We have roughly 2,100 square miles that we cover so its a win/win.

Our guys all have take home cars assigned. No sharing. But we only have about 60-70 cars in the fleet. It's not a huge department.

The other bonus is the cars last longer and are better taken care of. Our repair costs are way lower and people can call in from home if they get called into work.

Our cars usually get taken out of service at 150k miles. I can remember when I first started there were cars well over 200k, but we've gotten it down to 150k now.

Not a huge department! Heck it is compared to ours, we have 12 deputies, one is the head jailer, one is the Sheriff, one is the chief deputy, one is the investigator and one is the Drug Task Force member. So we really only have 8 road deputies to patrol 823 sq miles. We have 30K population according to the 2010 census.

Best thing that could happen to us is to send the U.N. to another country, where they can deal with their stupidity.
