Yesterday was the last day I personally had to hunt and as I was sitting in my stand I heard a crunch of some leaves. Low and behold when I snuck a look around the tree that was right beside the stand there were 3 does just starin me in the face. Needless to say I GOT BUSTED and I saw that their purdy white fluffy tails hop off into the sunset (Well, really the treeline but sunset sounded more dramatic)My huntin season has officially come to a close for this year, MAYBE JUUUSSSSST MAYBE ill take up turkey huntin.

Better luck next year!

The key to hunting, and being good at it...is doing it a lot and learning from your mistakes. Same as the rest of your life experiences. You will learn what a deer walking sounds like vs. a squirrel vs. a human vs. etc. Also...it might be time to build a "lean to", or some other blind to help you a) elevate yourself or b) otherwise camouflage yourself.

About turkeys. They can both see and hear better than deer. Do NOT underestimate them as an easier prey. The advantages you have over them is smell won't be as critical...and they roost at night. So you can locate in the evening and position yourself early morning to call them in (assuming they are willing to leave their hens).

Yeah well, Ish, never underestimate luck either. My dad has been at this longer than I have and has learned quite a bit over the years. His season came to an end this year with no deer either. Meanwhile, I've racked up 16 so far. Sometimes it really is luck of the draw <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I do believe in being in the right place at the right time...not sure I call it luck. You can prepare and position yourself for a higher probability of success.

My dad has gotten lazy in his older years. He doesn't scout anymore, nor is he willing to hunt off-hours. He used to be a machine if he wanted a good buck...scouting, identifying patterns, getting to the stand 1 hr early, hunting mid-day during the ruts, hunting every day work allowed, etc. Now he just goes when he feels up to it....not a fault, but you have lower probability of success with that type of approach.

I don't get to hunt often anymore due to work...so I have to depend on luck <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> That, and a rifle that will reach beyond the prey's area of concern. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I managed to hit a deer while on the road to my in-laws! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> Fortunately, it only busted the plastic headlamps cover and bent the hood some, so we were able to continue our trip. Of course, the goofy doe just bounded away! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

I can relate SFY, more than I care to admit.
I have an archery javalina tag that I need to make time for and a spring turkey tag to look forward to, so maybe I can redeem myself.
Tom,I'm glad that doe didn't mess you or your car up any worse.

I have had this happen 3 different times and every time Patti laughs that I cant even get a deer when I hit with a car.....................she then recommends that I give up hunting LOL

I'm glad no one was hurt

Dan, If you want to get her to stop, next time I get a call about a deer hit, I'll give you a call. All you got to do is bring it up to the Sheriff's office and I'll give you the permit for it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
