I think I would prefer the 1/4" blade, but would buy a 5/16" if that was what Dan decided to produce.

5/16" all the way.

It would be the ultimate "Big Dog" chopper.

Either 25/27" or 5/16" is good. Whatever thickness they'll go with, it'll be a beast.

Shouldn't that be poll on the bowie? A pole on a bowie would be a spear.

Hmmmmmm, the more I think about it now, I would really like to see a 3/8" thick blade at say around 10.5" long. We could call it the Scrapyard Molossus!!

You should definitely add a 3/8" option to that poll.

5/16 is fine...3/8" would be a BEAST!!!

I voted wrong...I put 3/16 instead of 5/16...The ability to do simple math seems to be leaving me!

I would love to see a 5/16, but believe me...whatever it is, it will be sitting with the rest of the choppers soon enough~!

GF- negative on the whale, in fact i just got it yesterday so its cherry is intact... not for long, of course -- i think skinning a whale would be right up its alley, though...

For a chopper or big knife, absolutely I want as thick a blade as I can get!

Thin small knives have their purpose too, though. I love me some moras and calypso jr's.

Sweet knife btw!

I voted 5/16 on the poll, I'll quite happily have 1/4 (Dan's new bowie) but I do like the .275 on the Scrappers. That 3/8 custom is a monster, it looks a big flat grind though so I guess it isn't that heavy....

I really feel that the 1/4" blade is an excellent size for strength, weight, and chopping/splitting duties. If you get too thick, you may as well carry a log-splitting wedge. Having said that, I still love my Fallkniven Thor, Gerber Bowie, and Cold Steel TrailMaster, all thicker than 1/4". Just my humble opinion.

I think anymore than 5/16 is probably overkill for general use. The .275 of the Scrappers strikes as a great compromise between such exotic monsters and .25 which to me has always been the gold standard for 'heavy metal'... I always loved the Trailmaster and would have bought a stainless one but for the fact they discontinued the 'AUS' one and made the warranty a meagre 5 years...

BLASPHEMER!! A blade can never be too thick!!

A 3/8" blade would make the Scrapyard Bowie the Ultimate Zombie Chopper, or UZC for short. It would be the pinnacle of chopping goodness.

Perhaps Dan could do a 3/8 thick (special order) 'SE' bowie for you ultra heavy metal fans! You could always ask, beg etc!

Or perhaps he could make a standard 1/4" thick for you more "sensitive" types.

I remember reading in an encyclopedia somewhere that proper men need at least a 5/16" thick large chopping blade. Anyone else remember reading this? I think it was in grade school when I first came across this requirement.

Yup, and I believe the Founding Fathers had originally included it in the Bill of Rights, but it did'nt make the final proof. I think it went something like this,

"Every able bodied man, with proper testicular fortitude, should have within his possession and on his immediate person a Bowie style blade of no less than 10" in length and no less than 5/16" at the spine, made from a properly heat treated high impact carbon steel with preferably a full flat grind and respirene C handles. These will be a necessity to help repel the zombie hordes that will surely challenge our young nation in the future. Men that lack testosterone or have innapropriately delicate wrists are recommended to carry a smaller mudder handled blade made from a proprietary blade steel known as...."

The rest of the text is covered in muddy hoof prints and is unreadable.

Well as a member of the BCAA I wish it to be known I whole heartedly endorse 5/16 (I did mention earlier I liked C.S Trailmasters!). Having said that when 'we' (U.S. and us Brits normally tag along to your wars) fight the zombie hoards can a have a SPAS 12 and lots of ammo please??

I have a CS Recon Scout. It's just like a trailmaster, but a little shorter. It's the knife that led me to the Swamp. I think it's an older one. It doesn't have a coating on it, it's bare steel, and sterile. Also it's a factory second. I got it on eBay for like $40-$50. [Linked Image from swampratknifeworks.com]

Andy - I don't know for sure, but your knife may be worth a little more as a collectable. My first Cold Steel knife was a sterile Recon Scout, a little more rare than all the marked ones on the market. I have never seen an uncoated Recon Scout. I DO have the older model Carbon V bladed Trailmaster which is uncoated. Tom

I thought that might be the case. I've never seen another one like it. And I've searched eBay's page for Cold Steel auctions for years.

Andy that C.S oddity could be a great way of financing lots of Dan knives...

Yeah, I've thought about that. My only other expensive knives besides my Rats are that knife, and my CS Kukri. I don't really want to have to sell them though. I don't know if it'd even sell for enough to cover one SY knife. I've seen several new ones sell recently for like $60-$70. And since this one is a second, I think that might bring the value down a bit. The profile isn't perfect, so I think that's why it was a second.

Nah, I wouldn't question Andy's priorities. Personally, I would keep the naked Recon Scout and find SOME way of buying a Yard knife - like the BOWIE !

The Camp Tramp was $120 the BR was $150, using that reference and a huge leap that makes the bowie around $120 or $130... A solid price would be nice though.

Since I can't seem to find the thread that you are talking about, can you direct me to it. Or, what did you want to find out?

Andy - I don't know for sure, but your knife may be worth a little more as a collectable. My first Cold Steel knife was a sterile Recon Scout, a little more rare than all the marked ones on the market. I have never seen an uncoated Recon Scout. I DO have the older model Carbon V bladed Trailmaster which is uncoated. Tom

I thought that might be the case. I've never seen another one like it. And I've searched eBay's page for Cold Steel auctions for years.

Cold Steel makes some nice choppers! Heres the one I have in Carbon V.

Nice. Mine's the biggest thickest black coated one. I'll take some pics later of mine and my Recon Scout to show ya.

Ok, here's my Recon Scout and Kukri.

First is my Recon Scout. I bought it on eBay for $61.76 with shipping.

As you can see from both sides, it is both sterile and without a finish. [Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com] [Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

Here's a spine shot
[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

Here you can see the 2nd marks on both sides of the guard and the butt.
[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

And here's my Gurkha Kukri that I got on eBay for $53.85 with shipping.

I don't know if this is a factory sheath. I've not seen another one like it.
[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

As you can see from the handle, the previous owner worked it pretty hard.

And here they are with some of my Rats.

Nice collection Andy! I would DEFINITELY keep the Recon Scout, as it is not only unusual but highly functional as well. Tom

I am still waiting for one like the one Jerry brought to Blade the last couple of years. Dan drop me an email if you are taking special orders for those!

That's a good question Progunner !! Dan said that the next model to be released would be the Bowie, but he hasn't listed any specs. or shown a picture of what it is supposed to look like. We are still waiting for Patti to use her feminine wiles to pry some information from Dan and then pass it along to us. We are all waiting !!!! Tom

Well then, it looks like we need to find out if Dan requires liquid lubrication like his brother and if so what brand. Then we just ply him with said lubricant until he tells us what we need to know.

What say you Dan?!?!?!

Well, I just listed both my Gurkha Kukri and Recon Scout on eBay. I need to raise some $ for my Street Scrapper 4, and now that I upgraded to better knives, I don’t have a need for them anymore. I can’t afford to be a collector and keep “queens” around. If they aren’t being used, out the door they go. Also, now that I’m used to a great unquestioned lifetime warranty such as here and the Swamp, I’m afraid to use an expensive knife without such a good warranty. If they don’t trust their knives, and stand behind them not failing, why should I have faith in the quality of their products? Hopefully they’ll sell well and will raise enough funds for my SS4, with a little left over towards my new PDA phone I’m wanting to save for. I was a little afraid that most people would be broke around Xmas and I wouldn’t get enough high bidders, but with any luck, I’ll soon have the $ for my SS4!

Cold Steal made some nice knives especially the CarbonV ones. I love their shovel
and machete kukuri and they do make stuff no one else does. That said it seems like most people start out with CS because they are available at your local knife store but when they get more knoledge and taste they start to upgrade.
I would consider holding on to nice Carbon V knives because they won't be making any more and most new versions are not as good.

Yeah, I can’t go “donation diving” here. They have cameras watching everything and signs saying they’ll have you arrested if you take anything. I’ve been shopping inside though, but it’s been pretty slim pickings for weeks. I was hoping they’d get a bunch of “grey goods” donated from Target returns. I figured after Xmas people would be returning a bunch of gifts. Not much so far though.

Yeah, I think they do make some neat stuff that you can’t get elsewhere. And they make pretty good pocket knives, I have several of their folders. I have the shovel too and I like it also. I don’t like their degrading quality though that I’ve been seeing. If they keep it up, they’ll be on par with Bud K pretty soon.

Andy, I like your naked Recon Scout. I have a coated version of one of those. It used to be my favorite knife before I discovered Swamp Rat, then Busse then Scrap Yard. Since I bought my first rat the CS knives have been in semi-retirement. I still take them out every so often to make sure that there is no rust forming, but they seldom get to play.

Who do you think taught his brother about liquid lubrication...I find Blue lubricates better than any of them but Makers usually hits the mark...so to speak.
