I tell people happy birthday because it means something to them. The amount of times the earth orbits the sun is meaningless to me.

Yeah, USUALLY for me it's just another workday.

Here is my take on calendars in a simple nutshell.

To me what is important about it is that people care enough about you to take the time and effort, to REMEMBER you, not the day itself. (Does that make sense)?

The Gregorian calendar, the one we use now, is pretty accurate. But, before it's existence, people celebrated birthdays at the wrong time. The earth was not in the same place it was when they were born. But now, with our fairly accurate calendar, it is pretty close to the same place as when they were born on their birthday. Or is it?

No. it is not. The entire solar system is moving. The entire galaxy is moving at astronomical speeds as is the entire cosmos. We will never be in the same place. Ever.

A true birthday would require me to return to the same place I was born.

I keep moving forward.

It makes a lot of sense to me. That is why I keep in touch with the people I care about regularly.

When I used to let people know when my birthday was, i would get an isolated call every March from a person wishing me happy day even though I haven"t heard from them in a year.

Yeah, things like that kind of make it hollow.

The Gregorian calendar was created after the Mayan calendar. There have been 514 leap years since the creation of leap years. That means if the Mayans were right about the end of the earth it would have happened 7 months ago.
