for whatever reasons I only reallly take to firearms in a .300 caliber. may sound silly but if you told me a .300 whatever would work but a .200 or a .400 was more practical I'd probably still want to go with 300.

My favorite rifle of all time is a .30-06. I can hunt big game in this region and not be worried about being undergunned.
I could easily hunt the rest of my life with one of my 308's and not think twice.
The biggest moose I ever shot was with my winchester model 88 in 308.
My current favorite hunting rifle is a Rem 600 in 308

good to know... as much as I read on the subject its a question until you are out there. my dad has a 30-06 that I may can convince him to let me shoot. other than that I don't see myself going past .308 for anything in mississippi. hogs and deer is what I really want to hunt so I figure im okay but so many choices makes you wonder.

and even though love to shoot my pellet guns and 10/22 I still wonder about a .38/357 for small game like squirrel and rabbit.
Most of the talk about why one cartridge is better than another is really just talk.
For deer hunting in my area anything in the 270, 38, 30/06 class of firearms are really pretty much the same.
My 30/30 and 44 marlin are just as good for 80% of the hunting I do

The only time I'd worry with a .308 or a .30-06 would be in grizzly country.
Never bothered me just packing a 308 up north.
The truth is that the drive there and back is more dangerous than the hunting.
Guys that hunt in grizzly country just like to impress people that never have been in those areas.
Makes us seem more manly than we really are

Well, it's worked on me!
I may really be Barney Fife while hunting in grizzly country
but darn it, when I tell the story you will know your talking to John Rambo

my 10/22 has run pretty good. aside from cheap ammo its gone through everything I stuck in it without a hitch. even picked up some aquila colbri ammo for it. stuff is quieter than my shrouded air benjamin discovery but it doesnt hit quite as hard. have to say I have been really surprised at what airguns are capable of. my 10/22 might get a bit dusty if I keep tinkering around.

Up here once a pellet gun reaches 500 fps at the muzzle (and certain energy level) it is classed as a firearm

Does that make it harder to buy?
