Maybe this has been covered before, but if not here we go.
We have an 11 year old Miniature Schnauzer that is a great dog for us. Doesn't shed, is a great ratter and watch dog. She is also very sweet and would not last in extreme temperatures in the wild with us for very long. She is part of our family and will be missed when she is gone. We love this dog.
Most don't like to think or talk about this so I'll start.
What would you do if you had to bug out? Humanly kill your pets? Take with you? Let loose?
I know this depends on your own situation and type of pet you have. The wife and I have already discussed this and would humanly kill our Sadie. It pains me to even think about this but you must be prepared.

In the event that we had to leave home the dogs would go with us. The shepherds can carry their own food and are very useful. From providing protection, companionship, warmth and a sense of whats normal.

It pains me to even think about this but you must be prepared. Either take them with you or put em down. Turning them lose makes you feel better, not the animal. You believe they will live s ome fantasy life, join a pack survive but in reality they will probably die suffering. There is a lot of articles on line about this topic and the danger of wild dogs during a disaster. I plan on taking em with, but I prepared for this and have no intention of going to a refugee camp such as during where animals are not allowed. Good luck.

Haha, saw the title and it brought back the following:
"You know you're a prepper when....
you have an emergency food source for your pets, and you see your pets as an emergency food source."
Sorry, just had to add that, carry on <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Our Penny (Jack Russell) is 14. We WOULD take her with us, as she IS our child. Hopefully we could keep her going with us but if she "Got down" I wouldn't have any choice. I couldn't stand to see her suffer.

Where I come from "I'd do whatever it takes to protect them" never would pertain to your pets. Other humans yes, pets never. I hope you mean within reason not knowingly putting your life on the line or taking another life. Try to explain that to your love ones left behind. "My Schnauzer can now take care of my family".

I feel and know in my heart every dog I have ever owned was literally part of my family. I would give the same effort to save my dogs as I would to save my sister. Of course offspring would take precedence, but I would risk my life to save my dog.
I do not believe humans are superior to dogs. Humans are smarter, but that in no way makes them better creatures. It makes us worse in many circumstances.

Yup, I agree with MB and JJ. We've had penny for going on 14 years. She IS our baby girl. Yes, I have put myself in jeopardy twice to protect her from MUCH larger dogs. Fortunately no animal was hurt (not even me).

Myself and your pet drowning and only one of us you can rescued, I guess I'm already dead since you consider me equal to or below your pet. your family members come first.
Am I missing something here? Is this how you would want me to react with your wife, children, mother or father?

Fortunately no animal was hurt (not even me). Sorry but not the same as putting your life on the line. Yes I have picked up my dog during a walk to protect her from a much much bigger aggressive dog. I had no where to run, I had no time to do anything but pick up my dog

44 Fred, I think you misunderstand. I AM NOT picking our pet over a human. I was basing MY thoughts on my wife and I and our pet Vs the scumbags. In a survival situation I do not consider those who intend to prey on the helpless/less able bodied as themselves to be human.

SH I'm glad you said that. I was really beginning to worry. When people I don't personally know use terms like family and will do what it takes etc. I must take them for their word and not what I think they mean. I have spoken to plenty of animal rights nuts that really put humans in the same or lower category as animals.

Thanks for posting that. My brother in law gave CPR to his little dog while I drove them to the Vet. The dog looked dead! No breath, heartbeat, blue tongue etc. He kept him alive for almost 20 minutes, I couldn't believe it.

I hope you mean within reason not knowingly putting your life on the line or taking another life. I was raised where animals are alot like guns. Cherished and respected but both tools. If you would possibly shoot someone for stealing something I do not see why that something could not be your dog.

I hear you! Most Americans wouldn't eat a dog. But we love our burgers. See where I am going? If humans are not superior to dogs, then dogs are not superior to cows. Lol, would you eat a human?

Imagine, do we get hot sauce? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
But I do agree. We see NOTHING wrong with eating Beef and Pork, whereas a large population of the world considers is sacrilege to do so. Who's right, who's wrong. Different cultures, different upbringing. I HAVE eaten dog, cat, snake, some bugs and supposedly monkey although I have my doubts about that. It's just food. Only our cultural differences make us see it as not so. Oh and I have also eaten mice and I forgot snails, NOT escargot, but ordinary garden snails.

Funny how this has taken on a spin that I had never thought of. Texans think the death penalty should be enforced for stealing your shovel (I love Texas). If Gods laws as the bible states were followed, this world would be a much better place. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!! A buddy of mine reminded me that his hunting dogs have found water in the desert that he had no idea was there. They could also find their own food and certainly keep you warm at night as well as provide security. Funny how some can relate better to animals than their fellow man.

This thread mainly revolves around dogs it seems. If I had a dog in moderate to good health I would take him with me. If his health was bad or failing I would probably put him down.
The reality is that I love all animals, companions as well as those who give their life to feed me. I live in a place where a dog is impractical, so my wife and I have 4 cats that we love. We have no car.
If bugging in was not an option and bugging out was a permanent situation that required us to move fast with little stuff, we would most likely put our oldest cat down (no teeth) and let the rest go. It would break our hearts, but unlike dogs cats are rarely a threat to humans and can take good care of themselves.
If the area was semi safe and we only had to bug out for a week but had to leave fast with little stuff, we would most likely leave the cats with an ample food supply and a bath tub full of water to drink. They easily take care of themselves with enough food and water, as well as each other's company. I would risk my life to come back and make other arrangements if plans suddenly changed.
Needless to say, we would attempt to bug in first or take them with us if at all possible. In a survival situation I would protect my pets with any necessary force against someone with ill intent.

My wife would grab our dog and leave me behind to rot in the nuclear wasteland.
Point is, the dog carries more value than I do. HaHA That sounds about the same as here. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> My dog is a Kelpie and has only ever lived in the bush so as long as we head to the scrub she would do fine. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I do not believe humans are superior to dogs. Humans are smarter, but that in no way makes them better creatures. It makes us worse in many circumstances.
I hear you! Most Americans wouldn't eat a dog. But we love our burgers. See where I am going? If humans are not superior to dogs, then dogs are not superior to cows. Lol, would you eat a human? If I was staving and there was noting else to eat. Have you read "Alive."

I would eat some dogs but not all. And I sure as h$@?! Wouldn't eat my dog. She is a German short hair pointer and is a very versital hunting dog. She would help feed me and my family.
Any day I'm above the grass and I'm not a zombie is a good day! JYD#138
