Thought any of you guys that have an iPhone/iPod/iPad might wanna add this to your BOB arsenal. I found a free app called I Need A Map in the app store that is a complete offline locally stored map of the continental US.

It not as good as Google Maps, and it requires 2G of space to install. However, if the GPS system is out, and the cel networks are down, I reckon this could be quite invaluable.

I installed it on my now antique iPod Touch 2G and it works just fine. Might wanna check it out. Did I mention it's FREE? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

** EDIT FOR NAME**
It's called "YOU NEED A MAP"

Sorry but it is not listed in Itunes as "I need a map".
Maybe a little more help.
Fred

With the recent push for all things smart phone, This needs to be brought back to the top! The OP stated it's for the iPhone in the itunes and called "You need a map".

I found it in the App Store.

Here's some info on the app "YOU NEED A MAP":

If you get lost or in an emergency, YOU NEED A MAP! A map that works everywhere even without a cell phone signal. A map that shows not just roads but also terrain, streams, lakes and other landmarks. A map that covers the entire USA, all 50 states. Sure, your iPhone has a great built in map but all it takes is one wrong turn and you could find yourself stuck in the snow behind a locked gate with no cell phone signal. What is the fastest way back to the highway? Should you go forwards or back? Is there a better road just a short distance away? Is there a raging stream or an steep cliff between you and the road? YOU NEED A MAP! You Need A Map is a huge application. It has to be. It contains every mountain, hill, stream, lake, pond, freeway, highway, local road and track from two large online databases compressed into a 2GB app. In addition it contains many buildings, trails, railways, points of interest and polygon features. It has everything you need to find out where you are and what is around you anywhere in the USA. Most navigation apps on the iPhone must transfer their maps from servers on the internet. This can be slow in areas with only 2G coverage or completely unavailable in wilderness areas where a map would be most useful. You Need A Map solves this problem by rendering maps directly on your iPhone. This extremely fast high quality software renderer is the first of its kind for mobile devices. As you move, you will generate a track file which you can replay. You can also import GPX tracks generated in other programs and play them. While recording or playing a track, the map will be centered on the current location and rotated towards the direction of travel and rendered in 3D with silky smooth animation. When playing a track, you can speed up, slow down, pause, restart or skip to the end. Send your GPX tracks to other apps or e-mail them.Want to learn more about a map feature? Click the target icon to display its name, feature type, urban area, state, elevation and coordinates. You will also see a bearing line back to your current GPS location or from your location to a selected way-point. The status will display the bearing direction and distance along with the map and GPS elevation, the track length, and your current speed and direction of travel You Need A Map uses the same code as Scenic Map and has most of the same features. These include many map customization options, customizable way-points, direction and bearing information, a smooth scrolling moving map display while driving or flying, city search and much more. You can also get the full feature set of Scenic Map with an in-app purchase.Documentation, detailed coverage maps, installation guide and blog are available on ScenicMap.com You Need A Map covers the entire USA including all 50 states Map data OpenStreetMap and contributors under the Open Database LicenseYou Need A Map supports GPS tracking while the app is in the background. Caution: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

What's new in this version:

Fixed a bug that caused lines not to render.Version 1.6.1:3D maps are now free.Support for iOS 7.Many more feature improvements and bug fixes. In app purchase for Scenic Map Features:BLM land polygonsCreate a route to any point in iOS 7Address, local feature and offline map feature searchNatural Earth Color ModeNote: Due to the increasing quantity of the Open Street Map data, the US Census roads had to be removed from this version in order to fit within the 2 GB app size limit.

I had some other info here, but it lead to the App store and wouldn't work on a desktop unless you had it linked up to your mobile phone. So go there on your phone manually.

Well I downloaded the app and I am impressed. I tracked myself from home all the way to work (it will also give you altitude readings). You will of course need to be "hooked up" for tracking and such but if you just need a map (like the state maps you can get) it has virtually every road there is and it also shows a lot of land features, trains, bodies of water, state lines and will also show county lines if you want. And it's free so you could always download it (needs about 2gigs) and could delete it if you don't like it.

So my old iPod Touch died and I ended up buying a new iPad Mini Retina, and lemme tell ya, this app is really fantastic on this device. The added screen real estate and processing power really make a difference. If there are no cell networks available and you need to find your way somewhere in the continental US, all you need is this and a solar recharging solution for your iPad and you are good to go. 2 Gigs is a small price to pay IMO.
