the handles look better now that I have been handling them. they darkened up quite nicely!

The heron lived at a local pond near me, and I visited it frequently. Whenever I visited, I'd stop the kids and dogs from chasing it. Eventually, the heron came to associate me with safety, and it would land closer and closer. In this case, it landed so close that I had to back up to get its full head in the frame.

I have had similar situations with animals. I have tried to hand-feed many back yard squirrels. It takes a lot of time to earn their trust. For squirrels, food helps over-come a lot. But, for a heron, that seems amazing. They seem VERY shy.
