Haven't tried this, but sounds interesting. Simply dip regular matches halfway in shellac:

Pretty cool, thanks for sharing that. Not knowing how to do it I tried this once using beeswax back a few years ago but it didn't work so well. Now I know why, (LOL), this is actually the first site I have seen on this topic.

Wouldn’t moisture wick up from the untreated portion of the wooden match and ruin the strike head from the inside?

I do it this way (if anyone is interested in another method):

Use Gulf Wax (paraffin).

Heat up the wax slowly in an old pot (or in an old pot in a pot of water [par boil]). Drop the matches into the liquid, take them out and put them in something that will allow them to stand striking head up. This lets the extra wax drain down to the end and not have the wax all globbed up on the striking head and therefore easier to strike.

Its a little easier than shellac, for me.

Sorry to interrupt, not trying to hijack thread.

Doc

Another good tip Doc, and I wouldn't worry about hijacking, this IS a thread about waterproofing matches, and that is what you talked about.

I checked out the site MD referenced and it's a pretty informative site. Lot of good info and tips/tricks there.
