I was on Sig's web site and saw they know offer their 556 in the 7.62*36 Russian. with a gas piston operating system, side folding stock, takes AK mags, and from what I hear is a accurate rifle it sounds like a great survival gun<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" /> What do y'all think? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbdn.gif" alt="" /> http://www.sigsauer.com/CatalogProductDetails/sig556r.aspx

Not a bad looking rifle, and in the caliber they might sell a ton of them.

Way cool, that just could convince me to sell a vintage red side fold AKS.

I'm sure it could be found below retail, once enough get in the system. I've seen my "pre ban" AKS listed for 1200, not that it would sell for that.

i agree, but do you think the street price will be worth it over a nice AK? I'm not sure either way, I'm just wondering....after all the buy it now price will still likely be right around a grand I would think. That is A LOT of AK + how many K of ammo?

saw these some months ago and got interested. after doing some reading and watching a few vids I figure these rifles are maybe too problematic vs just getting the arsensal ak or even converting the $300 saiga sporter rifles and putting $3-$400 in it. I see they are suggesting it's a 2012 release now because they maybe worked out the kinks. still would be hard to beat the ak's I'm thinking.
saw one in a shop here and it looks nice and almost looks like an ar15 since they had it right with the other ar's. but come to find out it's based on another type of rifle. forgetting what it was called but will probably google it in a bit.
so even though I liked the idea and I'm all for a rifle other than the ak47 in 7.62x39 all I keep coming up with is just get a nice ak or maybe a sks. I'm only guessing but it seems if you put $1k in the ak47 and you will likely end up with a better shooter than most people usually give the ak47's credit for.
also you may want to look at a model ak47 called the vepr. the more I see about it the more I think it's a good option for anybody interested in x39.

Pretty good post lazi. I've heard of the VEPR as well. IF I remember correctly it got good reviews.

I wonder how accurate it will be with cheap ammo.

The most reliable / durable magazine on the market is a ComBloc steel AK47/AKM mag. These will not takes those. They only work with plastic magazines. I've ready 9 or so reports of people complaining about the inability to use a bomb-proof $10 steel mag.
Also, I have owned several Sig556 in 5.56x45. The earlier guns had problems that required a trip back to the factory.
Reports of problems have died down, but if you end up with a Sig556 you'll need to thoroughly test it before you trust your life to it. I'd say 2,000 rounds would be a good "vet'g".
Lastly, 7.62x39mm is a great round. However, for SHTF you're more likely to have access to 5.56x45mm or 7.62x51mm. Our LE and .MIL all use 5.56x45. Our .MIL heavy use 7.62x51mm.

Looks like a failure waiting to happen. For the price a Sig is why not get a milled Arsenal. The Milled Arsenals are plenty accurate, take metal or plastic mags, have a good parts support, can be worked on by many people, and now even can be out-fitted with a T-1/H-1. Heck, if I ever go back to a 7.62x39mm it will be a SKS since I can be very accurate with them and they held there own in combat situations too.
