The chief cause of unhappiness and failure is trading what you want most in life for what you want at the moment.

Through hardened is a blade with the same tempor on every portion of the blade, edge and spine are just as hard. Differentially heated has a harder edge for better cutting etc but a softer spine to allow for greater resiliency. A softer knife is less likely to break. Differentially hardened knives give you the best of both worlds. Samurai swords with the clay tempering offer the same benefits as does San Mia.

The larger / longer the blade the greater the benefit. On short (and really think) knives the smaller added benefit gets outweighed by the added cost.

The softer spine on the same sized knife the more compression, lateral, and impact stress the blade can obsorb before breaking.
