There is an interesting old story up here about an asian placer miner during the kondike gold rush.

Way back then, gold was valuable and platinum was unknown. Platinum was just a dull grey metal not worth anything..

Anyways, the story goes that this miner just started throwing the pieces of this grey metal into an old pail he had. By the time he was done, he had filled two 5 gallon pails with it.

When he left his claim, he just left the buckets there as it was worthless and heavy..
