Depending on the orientation of your polarizing filter, it will cut overall light by as much as 1 and 2/3 stops. Under the right circumstances, it can also make the sky go nearly black.

Polarizing filters are very useful for certain situations.

I don't expect you'll need one for shooting songbirds.

well on the upside, my wife had a baby two weeks ago. i spend a good part of the night holding a sleeping baby. i can probably balance a baby on one shoulder and the laptop on my lap.
