Miraculously, as he leaves his workplace for the last time,

he finds the bar, which had been closed for years, going full blast.

He enters, and finds old friends and associates who had passed away, celebrating inside.

It seems like heaven!!

The last scenes of the show reveal he is standing and talking to no one inside a decaying building, just as it is struck by a wrecking ball and collapses.
