They even banned slingshots because some years back a bunch of kids have shot out most of the windows in NSW State Parliament building...

The execution of law slightly differs between states, but I recently read about a cattle man who was dragged to magistrate, had to pay fines and lost the knife because he entered a country town with a folding stockman in a sheath on his belt...

Catching criminals is easy. Its the courts that are the issue here. No penalty for doing the wrong thing and if there is the judges often negate it.
