I practice shooting out to 300 yards and I will never shoot at an animal over 250 yards away again.

I think the FN 5.7 is probably the best SD pistol cartridge ever at this point....
 -Armor defeating capabilities.
 -Incredible range and accuracy.
-Low recoil but high volume unfortunately.
 -High capacity capable.
love my 5.7. would be the first thing i grabbed if i looked up and saw a strange world outside my window. zombie and that... would not label it the best though... too many scenarios so the best becomes what you have on you when it comes time.

.308 can be used effectively out to 1 mile on man sized targets...... that is with an accurate gun, proper training and quality mil-dot based optics. Try still hunting with a rig like that I am not a target shooter but a hunter, I have hunted with a 308 win for about 30 years. I've shot moose, elk, deer and black bear with it my closest shot being under ten yards and the farthest being measured out at over 550 yards (moose) This I speak of is not relegated to the target shooting community. See Magpul Precision Rifle video for more explanations....

I have heard a bit about the 300 WSM and it seems to be a nice round. PLUS (IF Ive got my story straight) being a short action is a big plus in my book. Only downsides are : -high cost per round. -doesn't offer much terminal advantage over other .30 cal cartridges. -doesn't offer much extra range over other .30 cal cartridges. Lot cheaper to shoot then my 338 winmag Here in Canada the 300 wsm is about the same cost to shoot as the 300 winmag I have shot moose with both a 308 win and 300 winmag and my experience is the 300 hits with more authority It will have a slight terminal advantage over other .30's, but not much. The effects on your target is not an accurate measure as you would think...there are too many variables in this (ie shot placement, bullet performance etc. The wound channel will be larger but not as large as switching to a .338.... The best way to increase wound channel size is increase bullet diameter and profile, velocity has less of an impact than these factors. This is what I believe to be true anyways.... How much hunting have you done It is true that if you take the same 180 grain bullets and fire it from a 308, 30/06 or 300 winmag the only difference is velocity. However a way to think of it is what a 308 will do at 100 yards a 30/06 will do at 110 yards and a 300 winmag will do at 125 yards (not exact as I can't remember the velocity difference off of the top if my head)

I left out the part about using a PDA to use software which predicts trajectory..... this is the key to reaching out that far and getting on target fast.

You could also use balistic charts or BDC scopes.

That's the good thing about personal preferences lazi, they don't need to be backed up with any kind of data. It's just what we like.
