Doc Savage was a pulp character from the 30s and 40s. In many ways, he was the inspiration for Superman, but was a "normal" human, trained from birth to be a mental and physical marvel. Obviously, he had good genes as well, but he trained for two hours every day, exercising mind and body. He could speak and read dozens of languages, was an expert scientist in many fields, an adept surgeon, and a guy who "righted wrongs and punished evildoers."

The pulp books were reprinted as paperbacks from 1967 or so until around 1990. I found them when I was in 7th grade and continue to read them. Comic book revivals seem to come along every 5-10 years since the early 80s, but have never been very successful.

If you do a we search for a company called radio archives, they are reprinting all the pulps again. Much nicer versions, often going back and restoring material deleted from the pulp versions due to space limitations.

And Doc Savage "Trilled" then he was perplexed or deep in thought. (I read him too}! Wasn't one of his sidekicks Monk? MAN, it's been YEARS! I haven't read any of those books since probably 9th or 10th grade. (Would have been around '69 or '70)

And Yeah, I always thought of him as being more real than the comic characters you normally heard of.

Doc had 5 "assistants" who were outstanding in their fields, but also liked to adventure. Monk was a chemist, Ham was a lawyer and they fought and pulled gags on each other constantly to the annoyance of Doc. Their was also my favorite, Renny the engineer; then Long Tom the electrical wizard, and Johnny the archaeologist and geologist.

Doc also had a cousing named Pat, who was constantly trying to get involved in the adventures, while Doc worked hard to exclude her, since she was a female.

The books really harken back to an earlier, simpler age where good and evil were very straightforward. I suspect Indiana Jones was also inspired by Doc, although there were other, similar characters back then.

Yeah, and he had flake-gold eyes! Good memory about the trilling! Oddly, the current mayor of Kansas City is a Doc Savage fan. They did an article on his childhood and he brought it up.

Doc's writer, Lester Dent, was from La Plata, MO and said that the books were aimed at 15 year old boys. Forty years after that, I still enjoy them. Lester had to publish under a pseudonym, Kenneth Robeson. That pseudonym was also used for a series called The Avenger, which was not nearly as good, but also got republished in paperback in the 70s and 80s.

Well how bout that. Yeah, simpler times. We need to get back to some kind of semblance(hope I got it right) of that. The world does not need to be as complicated as it is.
