Not sure I remember the Avenger books. Later on I got involved reading The ashes series of books by William Johnstone and before that The Survivalist featuring John Thomas Roarke as the main character. Pretty good at first then the author (Jerry Ahern) went into the future many many years and I thought went to far. I mean tired vehicles as big as Aircraft carriers?

I read a fair number of the Executioner books, and liked the earlier Survivalist stuff, but that series went completely haywire (and needlessly so) with the time travel nonsense. Another series I enjoyed from the 80s was the Horseclans series. I think the author was Robert Adams.
