If I were deploying and I could take what I wanted Id want a small folder and a Regulator
The Reg is very light for its size, bomb proof, comfortable and works great with gloves on.

I've heard that non-issued knives are being confiscated from soldiers rotating back to the states. Don't know for sure if that is the case or if that would affect your choice. I'd go with the RTD and a multitool.

I would let him pick. But be sure to have him check with his unit. One unit may allow a certain blade others may have very strict or no restrictions at all.
Its very dependent on his specific unit or battalion etc. I had one that didn't want anything biggger than a tooth pick and another that I could have carried a sword.

The Rodent 6 seems to me the greatest allrounder. So I would go with that...
From the first time I saw it, it struck me at a good combat knife.
Having only one pancake, leaves more room for bacon!

But one consideration we have not talked about is he will have escort duty. That means riding in a vehicle hours a day. Will X length a blade work riding in a seat all day long? That's why I would take the RMD. Just my E 0.02 worth...

Rodent 6 seems like a good all arounder--looks like it could function well as a fighter if needed (that top quillion is designed for that--but it's a decent enough blade for everything he'd need. Put it in a Spec Ops sheath with a multitool and he's good. But like MB noted, need to check what his unit will allow. Take it with a grain of salt, considering I've never served in the military or in a war zone. Maybe some day, and if that day comes, I'd prefer the Rodent 6 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I know I'm not answering the original knife question, but for carry...
Obtain a Kydex sheath from Mashed Cat, Buy Brown, or Rainwalker...
PLUS...
IWB loops attachable to the sheath in various ways,
AND/OR...
the following from Rainwalker:
SKDS - Stationary Kydex Drop Strip
SKDL - Stationary Kydex Drop Loop
Kydex Belt Loops,
AND/OR...
the Malice Clips from Tactical Tailor, or paracord, or cable ties.
I have found that these items allow me to configure my Kydex sheaths however I want.
Some people like a Tek-Lok.

I went with the 511 out of that bunch for weight. If it was me though, I would look to gift a bandicoot..that's a mean little sucker and weighs next to nothing!
