Wow guys. I had a big scare this morning.
I was in the kitchen getting a bowl of rice krispies for my daughter when she came running in saying that she heard some rustling around in her closet. I went in to see if maybe one of our rat-dog chiuhahaus (sp) had gotten in there somehow. Nothing.
Then about 20 minutes laterI hear my wife yelling to me from the bedroom. I go back there and ask her whats up. She tells me that one of the dogs is under the bed, she could hear it moving around. The dogs arent allowed in the bedrooms et we are still ironing out potty training. However every once in a while one will sneak off and crawl under the bed and start scratching around the box of computer crap I stashed under there.
I peeked under the bed but didnt see anything. But there was evidence. One of the little turds had actully bitten a hole in the corner of the cardboard box big enough to crawl through. I yanked the box out but neither of the dogs were in there, but one of them had made a mess of the boxes contents.
Now im getting mad, and I figured I had better backtrack and check my daughters closet a little more closely. Sure enough in the back where we have some of her toys boxed up there were holes in the boxes like the one under the bed in my room.
I run into the living room to raise hell with mutt one and two. I start yelling at them and they are looking at me like im nuts. I took a breath to yell some more and then heard rustling in the kitchen. I went in to see where the sound was coming from and the cabinet door under the sink was moving a little. I figured I would open the door and surprise whatever was in there but first I grabbed a bucket and a broom to catch whatever it was. I was thinking maybe a Raccoon had somehow gotten in so I put on some gloves as well to be safe.
I opened up the cabinet slowly and saw all of the cleaning supplies knocked over but no critter. To top it off there was a freaking hole in the wall!
I grabbed a flashlight from the kitchen drawer ( no idea why I hadnt grabbed ne to begin with ) and aimed the beam into the hole. I didnt see anything but that wall connects to most of the rooms in the house...My wife and I's bedroom, my daughters bedroom, the storage closet and the hall closet. Now I see how whatever it is is ghosting its way in the house from room to room unseen.
To avoid any contact of whatever it was with my wife and daughter I waited for them to leave the house . They are going to visit a friend for the day. I figured that'll give me time to deal with the situation. I never told either one about the hole I found, I wanted to keep everything from them until I had dealt with everything.
As soon as my wife and daughter left the house I ducked into the storage closet and didnt see anything. I did however grab my FFBM just in case. I then crept up to the hall closet and stood outside of it quietly. I stood there for what seemed like 5 minutes but was prolly only 30 seconds. I heard somthing moving around and grabbed the door and flung it open while shining the light in with my FFBM at the ready. ( I had switched up the regular flashlight with a miner light to keep my hand free for the FFBM and also had a metal garbage can lid in the other hand).
Standing there staring at me was the biggest rat I had ever seen in my life. I yelled at it and made a move towards it with my FFBM and the freaking thing stood on its hind legs and HISSED at me. I was like ok take this...and tried to stab the bastard but it scrambled back to the corner of the closet and ducked into a hole there.
Now I have a big assed Psycho rat in my walls. Whats the best was to flush this sucker out? I have until my family get back home around 6pm, approximately 7 and a 1/2 hours. I dont feel like poison, maybe a trap of some kind?

Did you scream like your doughter I would have. Lol. Just put steel wool in all the holes but one and a trash can in the last one. Then you'll have a rat in a can.

Ok I used some plywood I have and secured all of the holes except for the one in my daughters closet as it has the most room to work. In that one I rigged up a trap using a dog crate, some cheese and a sheet of thin metal to cover the hole in the dog crate. I have the dog crate opening against the hole in the wall and the sheet metal between the upper edge of the crate and the wall with enough room that it can slide down. I have the cheese tied to a string so when it is moved it will release the little stick I have proping up the sheet metal. If all goes well he will slip in and grab the cheese and that will drop the sheet metal. I can then turn the dog crate onto the side that will make the opening face up. Then simply close the door.
Then I closed all the doors in the adjoining hall. When he is trapped Im gonna open the front door before I flip the crate...that way if he somehow gets out while I am doing it he only has one direction to run.I'll flush him towards the door.
Now we wait.
