Are they all going to be road officers?

It will take time. Thats 3 academies along with a lateral class to put on. We will be busy.

So most will be new officers? I figured you would have applicants from other agencies.

We will have a mix of laterals and new. I am pushing for 10 laterals directly to patrol, we need experienced folks to offset the new recruits.

YUP. I don't know about out there, but when I went through our academy It only gave you the book stuff. Thankfully I had already been involved in LE for about 3 years dispatching and sometimes riding with deputies and city officers.

we run a 22 week academy inhouse. Then you have another minimum 14 week FTO program which can go up to 18 weeks.

Thats just to get them on their own.

I personally wouldn't call ours an academy (at least the old one). It was ran and held at the local SEMO State University. Back then it was only 124 hours long and could be done on weekends (what I did since I was working full time here at the Sheriff's office). NOW it is like 500+ hours I think and is done full time 8 hours a day 5 days a week with some training done on the weekends. BUT no driving skills training. You are then considered a certified police officer by the state and are hire-able by any LE agency in the state. Then each individual agency has it's own specifications (but some just put you in a car and tell you to go to work). That's what happened to me.
