A choil on a larger blade might be ok.

I like that I can choke up on my 711 and it is really well balanced when I hold it in that grip.. but I for one would rather use a smaller blade for fine work and leave the larger blade in itīs sheath. Unless I for some reason opted for the one knife solution that day. How often do you? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Handles are also important.

On a smaller knife I like a handle option that lets me get close to the edge. I would be more likely to pick up the vex than the cabs.

I guess it also depends on how you use your knife and for what.

..most days I think that choils are a vaste of cutting edge.
..on the other hand I find the Chopweiler with a large choil really sexy!!

I voted no choils.

In my opinion you donīt need to grab the blade. There is no perfect knife for every job so I think itīs convenient to take two knives with you.

It really depends on the knife....

On a Basic 10 LE, I prefer not having a choil because it's light enough to choke up on the spine easily.

But on the Rodent 9, I think the choil makes a lot of sense because it weighs almost twice as much as the B10LE.

I like the small choil on the War Dog & Basic 4 LE because it's there if you need it, and if you don't then it doesn't waste too much edge. They may not be the most usable choils, but they work as choils for me and my little fingers.

Just my preferences, which is what this all boils down to....

I love the choil on a longer blade (8"+) and prefer little or none on a hunting blade (4-5")

Don't like them in the least.
But then again I think most knives have a handle that is a little too short.
If a handle fits my hand properly I don't find any need for a choil

I voted yes over 6". But it really depends on the knife. Some knives in the 6-7 range are well balanced enough they dont need them. Really comes down to what feels good in your hand and your intended use.

I voted no choil. I can live with a small choil like on the Basic 4 LE but when its large like on the Basic 6 LE it seems like a waste of blade. Plus it looks off to me - there is more handle and choil than blade.

I didn't vote because although I lean toward choils and most of my knives have them in actual use I rarely use them.

I also would love to find a CABS. It seems like it would be very close to an ultimate bushcraft blade.

choils are rarely big enough for me to use them safely, so I'd rather not have them at all.
if I need to choke up on a blade, i pinch the blade between fingers and the ball of my thumb as high up as I need to for the job at the time.

I like them on knives up to about 7 inches. Lots of people say they like them on big knives "for fine work". If you're a real knife nut you should have a smaller knife in your pocket for fine work. I always have a Spyderco or Emerson clipped in the right front pocket so it's always handy. To each his own.
